Earache in Ireland: when to see a GP

The creche gate is in sight and a small hand will not leave one ear. Here is when an earache can wait, when to see a GP in Ireland, and when you still need 112.

The coat is half on. The creche gate is in sight. Your child clamps one hand over an ear and will not move. You are already late. That is usually when people type earache when to see gp ireland and hope the answer is paracetamol and the couch, not a waiting room.

Most earaches are not an emergency. Many settle in a few days. Some need a GP. A few need 112 or the emergency department the same hour. If a red-flag sign is already there, skip the home list.

Book an appointment if you already want a GP. How it works and pricing show the steps and the live fee.

What an earache usually is

Earache is common, especially in young children. It often starts suddenly. The pain can be sharp. HSE advice for patients in Ireland is that most earaches come from a viral infection and clear in about 3 to 4 days. Antibiotics do not fix a virus.

A cold or a sore throat can sit behind the pain. One ear or both. A temperature of 38°C or higher can come with it. Hearing can dip a little. A young child may pull the ear, refuse food, or seem off balance.

With no fever, it can be earwax, or glue ear (fluid left after a cold). It feels dull and can linger. Pain when you tug the outer ear is more the ear canal. Keep it dry. Do not use old drops until a GP has heard the story.

When you can try home care first

If the person with the earache is otherwise well, a straightforward ache often needs pain relief and time.

Paracetamol or ibuprofen can ease pain and fever if the packet says they suit that person. Do not give aspirin to a child under 16. Do not put cotton buds, oil, or anything else inside the ear.

Give it 3 to 4 days if they are drinking and waking as usual, the pain eases with the medicine, and there is no discharge. A baby should still be feeding and easy to rouse. Stay home from school or work if there is a fever.

When to see a GP for an earache in Ireland

This is the earache when to see gp ireland question in plain terms. Contact a GP if you or your child has an earache and any of these fit:

An online GP can take this history by phone or video. They can talk through pain relief and decide if treatment should go to your local pharmacy. A phone camera does not replace the light a GP uses in the ear. If they need to see the eardrum, they will send you to be seen in person.

Paying for the visit does not buy a medicine or a note. We do not sell or ship medicines. A cold that is the bigger problem has its own guide: cough or cold in Ireland.

Keep your registered GP for ongoing ear trouble and hearing checks. One online visit does not move that record. See online GP and your registered GP in Ireland. DSP Illness Benefit and some employer forms can still need that practice. A certificate is not a guarantee.

Red flags: call 112 or go to ED

Do not book a planned slot if any of this is happening. Call 112 or 999, or go to the nearest emergency department.

BookMyDoc is a planned GP visit, not overnight cover. If you are unsure whether it can wait, read online GP or A&E in Ireland.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an earache last?

Many viral earaches ease over 3 to 4 days. Contact a GP if it is not improving by then, if fluid is coming from the ear, or if hearing stays muffled and that worries you.

Do I need antibiotics for an ear infection?

Most earaches are viral. A GP decides if treatment is suitable. If it is, they may send it to a local pharmacy. We do not sell or ship medicines.

Can an online GP see inside the ear?

They can hear the story and look at swelling you show on video. They cannot examine the eardrum with a light the way an in-person GP can. If that exam is needed, they will say so.

Can my child go to school with an earache?

Many children can go if they are well and the pain is settling. Keep them home with a fever. A school note is only issued when a GP thinks it is clinically appropriate. Paying does not buy the note.
