How to book an online GP in Ireland

Surgery is full and you still need to talk to a doctor today. Here is how to book an online GP in Ireland with BookMyDoc, what to have ready, and when to skip a remote visit.

It is 4pm. Your usual surgery is closed for the list, and you do not fancy a two-hour wait. That is when most people look up an online GP Ireland option and hope a phone or video slot is still free.

BookMyDoc is a nationwide phone and video GP service. You book on the website, pay the fee shown on screen, then speak with an IMC-registered GP. This page is the booking how-to. It is not a shop for certificates or medicines. Those only happen after a proper consult, and only when the GP decides they are clinically appropriate.

Book an appointment when you are ready. Skim how it works and pricing first if you want the layout before you click.

What an online GP Ireland visit is

An online GP Ireland appointment is a scheduled phone or video consultation with a doctor who is registered with the Irish Medical Council. You can use it from home, work, or anywhere quiet with a signal.

People also search online doctor Ireland, GP online Ireland, and how to book a GP appointment online. They all point at the same job: talk to a GP without sitting in a waiting room.

BookMyDoc covers the Republic of Ireland. Keep your registered GP for ongoing care and HSE pathways. We do not replace emergency departments.

What to have ready

A few details speed the form up.

Your full name and a working email. A phone number we can actually reach. Date of birth. A short note on why you need the visit. A card for payment.

If you already have a patient account, use the same email so the booking lands under My Appointments.

You do not need a Healthmail address to book a consult. If a GP later sends treatment to a pharmacy, that is a separate clinical decision.

How to book an online GP Ireland appointment

Go to book an appointment. The flow is the same on a phone or a laptop.

Choose the service

Pick the visit that matches why you are here. For most people that is a general phone or video consultation.

Occupational health is a different service if you need a fit-for-work style assessment. Do not pick a service you do not need just to get a cheaper slot. The fee on screen is for that consult type.

choose your service

Pick a date and time

Use the calendar. Times that have already passed are gone, so you only see what you can still book. Same-day slots appear when a GP is free. They are not promised every hour, and evenings and weekends cost more.

pick date and time

Enter your details

Type your name, email, phone, and date of birth carefully. A typo in the email means confirmation messages go missing.

enter patient details

Tell the GP why you are booking

Write the main problem, how long it has been going on, and anything that matters such as medicines or allergies. You can attach a photo or a letter if you have one.

Clear notes help. "Unwell" is vaguer than "sore throat and fever since last night, and I cannot do a full shift."

Pharmacy details, if they appear

Some booking paths ask for a pharmacy. Fill that in if you are shown the field. A GP still decides whether any medicine is appropriate. A pharmacy line on the form is not an order.

Check and pay

Read the summary: service, date, time, fee. Pay on the secure screen. After payment you get a booking reference. Watch Messages and email for clinic updates.

What it costs

Typical weekday daytime visits are €35.99. Evenings are usually €40.00. Weekends are usually €40.00. Always check the live figure on pricing and on the booking screen before you pay.

A longer breakdown is in how much an online GP costs in Ireland.

Phone and video sit on the same fee bands. If you are unsure which to pick, video vs phone is the comparison.

After you book

Open your patient panel. The visit sits under My Appointments. Clinic notes come through Messages.

Join on time from a quiet spot. Keep a charger nearby. If you need to ask about changing the time, reply in Messages rather than booking a second slot on top of the first.

If you needed a sick cert, that is decided in the consult, not at checkout. See how to get a sick cert online in Ireland.

Dublin and Leinster readers can also use seeing an online GP in Dublin.

If the booking is for a same-day note in Dublin, a fit-to-work line, or a question about your own GP, read same-day sick cert in Dublin and Leinster, occupational health and fit-for-work notes in Ireland, and online GP and your registered GP in Ireland.

When not to book online

Skip the booking screen and use 112 or 999, or go to the nearest emergency department, if you have chest pain, severe breathlessness, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, a high fever with confusion or a rash that does not fade under a glass, or a mental health crisis.

Online care is also a poor fit when you need a hands-on exam, stitches, or tests that cannot wait. BookMyDoc is not a substitute for your own GP.

FAQ

Can I see an online GP Ireland doctor the same day?

Often, if a slot is still on the calendar. Same-day is not guaranteed.

Do I need an account first?

You can start the booking with your email. Use one address and stick to it so appointments stay in one place.

Is this only for Dublin?

No. BookMyDoc is nationwide across the Republic. Phone and video work from any county with a connection.

Does booking include a certificate or pharmacy treatment?

No. You pay for the GP consultation. Certificates or treatment sent to a pharmacy only follow if the GP decides they are clinically appropriate.
