Same-day sick cert in Dublin and Leinster
You wake up in Dublin too rough for the Luas, and work wants a note today. Here is how a same day sick cert works with an online GP in Leinster, and when you still need in-person care.
The alarm goes off in a Phibsborough flat and your throat is on fire. HR has already pinged. That is the usual moment people search same day sick cert and hope they do not have to sit in a waiting room.
If you live in Dublin or elsewhere in Leinster, you can book a phone or video visit with BookMyDoc. An IMC-registered GP assesses you. A medical certificate is issued only when that is clinically appropriate, and only if a slot is free. Paying for the consult does not buy the paper.
Nationwide steps sit in how to get a sick cert online in Ireland. This page is the Leinster angle: speed, local life, and when same-day is realistic. If the request is a fit-to-work certificate, not time off, use medical and fit-to-work certificates online.

What a same day sick cert is
A same day sick cert is a doctor's note or medical certificate dated the same day as your GP visit. In Ireland people also say sick note online, sick cert Leinster, or online sick note Dublin. Same document. Different labels.
It confirms a registered doctor assessed you and, if they agree, that you were unfit for work or college for a stated period. It is not a product on a menu. The GP writes what matches the assessment, not a blank number of days you typed into a form.
Same-day means "if a slot is open and remote care is safe." It does not mean every morning in January.
Employer rules vary. Some want a note from day one. Others give you uncertified days. DSP and Illness Benefit forms can be different again. Some of those still need your registered GP. Say so in the consult if HR named a specific sheet.
Can you get one online in Dublin?
Often, yes. An online GP in Dublin can assess many straightforward illnesses by phone or video. That helps if you are in a bedsit in the city, working from home in Kildare, or too dizzy to drive in from Meath or Wicklow.
BookMyDoc is nationwide, so the rest of Leinster is in the same booking calendar: Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, and the counties above. You do not need to travel to a Dublin clinic.
The GP will ask what is going on, when it started, and how it stops you working safely. Driving, ladders, or a warehouse shift is a different conversation from a desk day.
How to ask for a same day sick cert
Book early if today is the day you need. Evening and weekend slots cost more and still run out.
- Check online care fits. Chest pain, severe breathlessness, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, or a high fever with a rash that does not fade under a glass belong with 112 or 999, or an emergency department. Do not wait on a certificate.
- Book a phone or video appointment. New to the clicks? See how to book an online GP in Ireland.
- Pay the fee on screen. Weekday daytime visits are typically €35.99. Evenings are usually €40.00. Weekends are usually €40.00. Confirm on pricing.
- Tell the GP your symptoms, the dates work asked for, and what your job actually involves.
- If a certificate is appropriate, download it from My Certificates in your account. Check your name and the dates before you send it to HR.
What to have on your phone
A short list is enough.
Name, date of birth, and a number that rings. When symptoms started. Regular medicines and allergies. The dates you have already missed. Your workplace absence rule if you know it.
Join from somewhere quiet. Video helps if the GP needs to look at a throat or a rash. Phone is often enough when the story is clear.
Be plain. "Migraine since 6am, lights make me sick, I cannot commute" is more useful than "not well."
Will my employer accept it?
Many Irish employers accept a certificate from an IMC-registered GP. Policies still vary. A clinical note is not the same as guaranteed sick pay.
Follow your own reporting steps. Send the document in the window they asked for. If they want a named DSP form, we cannot promise an online visit will cover it.
Statutory sick leave has its own rules, including service time and medical certification. Check your contract or HR rather than treating this article as legal advice.
When a remote visit is the wrong door
Skip BookMyDoc and use emergency services or the nearest emergency department if you have severe chest pain, serious breathing trouble, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, a severe allergic swelling of the face or throat, a seizure, or thoughts of harming yourself.
Call 112 or 999. Get help first. The note can wait.
Online care is also a poor fit when you need a hands-on exam, stitches, or tests that cannot wait. Keep your registered GP for ongoing care.
