Fit to work certificate in Ireland: occupational health and returning to work

HR wants a fit to work certificate, not another sick week. Here is how occupational health with an online GP in Ireland works, and when you still need your own doctor.

You have been off three days. The inbox is quiet until HR asks if you are fit to come back, and whether a GP will put that in writing. What they want is a fit to work certificate. That is a different job from a simple sick week. People type occupational health gp ireland and hope one video call covers the form.

Sometimes it does. Sometimes the form is built for your own registered GP, or for a workplace occupational-health team. Paying for a visit does not buy the paper.

If you only need a standard sick cert because you are unwell today, use how to get a sick cert online in Ireland. This piece is about a fit to work certificate, return-to-work, and occupational health.

Book Occupational Health when you already know that is the visit type. That page is the main certificate page: the fee, the visit, and what the note is not. Skim services and pricing first if you want the layout.

What occupational health means here

On BookMyDoc, Occupational Health is a GP visit. Phone or video. If you are unsure which format suits, read video or phone. An IMC-registered GP looks at your health against the work you do, or the note your employer asked for.

That can include:

  • A fit-to-work review after an illness
  • Workplace health advice when a job is making symptoms worse
  • An occupational-health certificate if the GP decides one is appropriate

It is not a factory walk-around. It is not a specialist occupational physician on site. It is not a stamp you can order without a consult. Issuing a certificate is at the GP's clinical discretion.

Your employer may still want their own occupational-health provider. Some sites only accept that. Ask HR which heading they need before you book.

When an employer asks for one

Employers ask at different points. After a few days off. Before you restart nights. Before you go back on a site. A college can ask too, if the course has a placement.

Read the email. If they want the days you were unfit, that is the sick-cert path. If they want you back on the floor, or back with a lift limit, that is a fit to work certificate.

The GP will not date the certificate for days they have not assessed. There is no backdating.

Fit-to-work is not the same as a sick cert

A sick cert says you were, or are, unfit for work for a stretch of days. A fit-to-work note says you can return, or return with limits. Same GP. Different question.

HR language jumps around. Fit note. Return-to-work. Fitness for duty. Medical clearance. Read the email. If they want “unfit from Monday to Wednesday”, that is the sick-cert path. If they want “safe to resume night shifts” or “can lift again”, that is occupational / fit-to-work.

Bring the form if they sent one. A photo of the page in the chat helps. The GP cannot invent duties they have not heard about.

Illness Benefit and some DSP forms still often need your registered GP. We say that on services. Do not assume an online note will pass every desk.

What the GP will ask

They need the job, not only the diagnosis. Driving? Food handling? Heights? Night work? A classroom? A laptop and a headset?

Useful things to have ready:

  • What HR asked for, in their words
  • When you were last at work
  • What still hurts, and what has settled
  • Medicines you already take, if that affects safety at work
  • Any limits you already know (no heavy lift, no night duty)

They may say you are fit, fit with adjustments, or not fit yet. They may say you need to be seen in person, or that the form is one they cannot sign. That is a clinical call.

If the story sounds like an emergency, skip the booking. Use 112 or 999 or the nearest emergency department. BookMyDoc is a planned clinic, not A&E.

When you need a face-to-face assessment

Some roles need more than a phone or video visit. That includes some occupational health forms, driving jobs, and other safety-critical work. A specialist, or your own GP, may have to see you in person.

A remote GP can still start the conversation and tell you if the form is one they can complete. They will not sign a clearance they cannot stand over.

How to book it

On book an appointment, pick Occupational Health, not a generic slot if the note is about work fitness. Phone or video. Same-day if a GP is free. We do not promise a slot every hour.

How it works is the short version: account, slot, live fee, then the call. Weekend and evening hours sit on weekend and evening online GP in Ireland if that is when you can talk.

If HR is waiting on a fit to work certificate, book the Occupational Health visit. After the visit, a certificate is issued only if it is appropriate. If they need to send treatment to a local pharmacy, that is a separate clinical decision, not a shop.

What it costs

Occupational Health visits are from €35.99. Evenings are usually €40.00. Weekends are usually €40.00. Hours are typically 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Ireland time. Evening hours are 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Weekend hours are 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Exact price shown before you book. Check the amount on pricing before you pay.

Keep your registered GP for ongoing care and for any form they must sign themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online GP write a fit-to-work note?

Yes, after they assess you and decide a fit to work certificate is appropriate. Issuing a certificate is at the GP's clinical discretion. They will not sign a blank form because you paid.

Is this the same as a sick cert?

No. A sick cert covers time off. Fit-to-work covers going back, or going back with limits. If you need the time-off note, use the sick cert online Ireland guide.

Will every employer accept it?

No. Some want their own occupational-health service or your registered GP. Ask HR first.

What if I work nights or drive for a living?

Say that on the call. Driving, some occupational health forms, and other safety-critical roles may need a face-to-face or specialist assessment. The GP may refuse a remote certificate and send you in person.

Can a fit to work certificate be backdated?

No. The GP will not date it for days they have not assessed.
