Why book an online GP appointment in Ireland?
The surgery voicemail says ring back tomorrow. You still need a GP tonight. Here is what an online GP appointment in Ireland actually gives you, and when a remote visit is the wrong call.
The kettle has just boiled. School shoes are still in the hall. Then the surgery voicemail says there are no routine appointments this week. That is when people look up an online GP appointment in Ireland and hope a phone or video slot is still open.
BookMyDoc is that kind of visit. You book a time with an IMC-registered GP, by phone or video, anywhere in the Republic. You pay the fee shown on the screen. The GP can give advice. If treatment is appropriate, it can go to a pharmacy you name. A certificate is a separate decision, after the consult, and only if it is clinically appropriate. Paying does not buy a note or a medicine.
This page is the why. The clicks are in how to book a GP appointment online. The live fee is on pricing. If someone is struggling to breathe, has chest pain, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, or has collapsed, stop. Call 112 or 999, or go to the nearest emergency department.
Five reasons people book an online GP appointment in Ireland
These are ordinary reasons. None of them replaces your registered GP.
You get a clock time instead of a full list
A practice list can be gone by mid-morning. A booked slot is a time you can see before you pay. Same-day times appear when a GP is free. They are not promised for every hour. Evenings and weekends show when a doctor is rostered. That is useful on a Sunday. It is not overnight cover.
Book an appointment and look at the calendar before you decide.
You choose phone or video
A sore throat you can describe often works on the phone. A rash, a red eye, or something you need to point at is usually better on video. You pick when you book. There is no extra camera fee on a general Online Consultation. The time of day changes the fee. The camera does not.
For video, join from the appointment card once the clinic adds the Meet or Zoom link. Sit somewhere quiet. Charge the phone. Keep a list of medicines you already take beside you. The longer comparison is video or phone.
The fee is on the screen before you pay
You see the amount for the slot you pick. The consult fee is not added later at a till.
On 6 October 2026 a general Online Consultation was €35.99 on a weekday inside 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Ireland time. Evenings 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM were €40.00. Weekends 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM were €40.00. Those figures can change. Read pricing again before you pay. The longer fee note is how much an online GP costs in Ireland.
Saturday and late weekday slots are covered in weekend and evening online GP.
You can stay put when a remote visit is safe
No bus, and no waiting room full of other people's colds. Home, work, or a quiet car with a signal is enough, as long as you can talk privately.
This does not fit everything. Skip it if you need bloods, stitches, a hands-on exam, or a wound looked at in the room. Skip it if a child is floppy, hard to wake, or will not feed. If your own GP can see you today, use that. BookMyDoc does not replace that relationship, and it is not the HSE out-of-hours co-op.
People also book for an earache, a short tummy bug, or back pain that is not an emergency. See earache in Ireland: when to see a GP, diarrhoea and vomiting: when to see a GP, and back pain relief: when to see a GP in Ireland.
If treatment is needed, it can go to your pharmacy
After the visit, the GP may send treatment to a local pharmacy, when that is clinically appropriate. Many Irish pharmacies take Healthmail. You collect it, or you use that chemist's own delivery. We do not sell or ship medicines. The pharmacy may charge its own fee. Not every medicine is suitable after a phone or video visit.
A return visit about treatment you already use is a Medical Review or a Follow-up Consultation. A note for work or college is a different article. If that is the only thing you came for, read how to get a sick cert online in Ireland. The GP still decides. DSP Illness Benefit and some employer forms can still need your registered GP.
When you should not book
Do not use the booking form for an emergency. Call 112 or 999, or go to the nearest emergency department, for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, heavy bleeding, collapse, or a baby who is floppy and will not feed.
A planned slot is also the wrong tool when you already know you need a blood test or a physical exam today. If you are unsure, say that on the call. The GP will tell you if a remote visit cannot answer it. Online GP or the emergency department walks through that split.
